Santiago Fariña joins the Global Methane Hub as the Program Officer for Agriculture-Livestock. He is interested in changing food systems to reduce their impact on climate change and enhance their overall sustainability. His expertise is in livestock systems, particularly in developing countries and in projects with a triple bottom-line approach.
Santiago’s previous job was at INIA Uruguay as the director of the national dairy research and technology program (2015-2023). His work involved leading a team of researchers and on-farm staff to carry out projects related to dairy sustainability as well as linking with governments, institutions, and companies. Prior to that, he worked as a freelance researcher and consultant in Argentina and Australia (2010-2015), including some university lecturing.
Santiago grew up on a beef farm in the south of Argentina, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. He moved to Australia to complete a Ph.D. in Dairy Systems at the University of Sydney.
Santiago is married to Magdalena, and they have a son, Jeremías. They live in Uruguay, outside Colonia del Sacramento, surrounded by farmland and close to the water. In his time off, Santiago loves water sports (kitesurf, surfing), reading, and a bit of gardening.
