WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, as Congress debates the EPA’s rule to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector via a fee on methane emissions exceeding a certain amount, the Global Methane Hub is releasing a new poll that shows most Americans are in favor of keeping the policy.
When asked if they support “the implementation of a fee that oil and gas producers must pay to the U.S. government for wasted methane gas that contributes to pollution,” 71% of respondents said that they agreed. The poll was conducted by Burson Global.
“Reducing methane pollution grows the economy, improves public health, increases food security, and protects the environment to avoid exacerbated weather events,” said Marcelo Mena, CEO of the Global Methane Hub. “Americans want mega-emitters – big oil and gas companies – to be accountable for their methane pollution. With access to publicly available emissions data at an all time high thanks to satellites like MethaneSAT and Carbon Mapper, the global momentum for policy solutions will only grow, not shrink, no matter what happens in Congress today.”
Addressing methane pollution is the fastest way to drive down global temperatures. Policy makers across the globe, scientists, corporations, and citizens are in a sprint to lower greenhouse gas pollution as the climate crisis worsens. Methane is incredibly potent – 86 times more than CO2 – which means curbing pollution here can help stave off catastrophic changes to the climate. A super pollutant, methane is responsible for roughly 45% of recent net global warming.
